Summer of Cycling in and around Byron.

Spaghetti Circus

East Coast Blues and Roots Festival (Easter) The organisers of this festival spend most of the year getting together an incredible international selection of performers. Usually, the largest marquee in the southern hemisphere is brought in to house one of several sound stages, which see dozens of acts over the 5-day festival, come rain or come shine. Always a hit for thousands of blues lovers.

Billy Cart Derby, Bangalow, The main street of town is blocked off to traffic while hundreds of kids test out the engineering skills of their friends, parents, and each other. Is it a bath? Is it a plane? If it’s on wheels, you’ll see it in Bangalow. (May)

Nimbin Mardi Grass (May) Those interested in alternate realities may find the day-drip to Nimbin quite a treat during Mardi Grass, particularly the parade down the town’s main street, and the various product quality testing awards.
Whale Watch Season: June-July. Off the tip of Australia’s eastern most point, Cape Byron, is a particularly good venue to watch the annual migration of humpback whales, moving from feeding grounds in the Antarctic, northwards to give birth in the warm equatorial waters of the Great Barrier Reef.

The humpbacks pass very close to the headlands, and the high cliffs provide a prime vantage point to observe this spectacular natural event. At Cape Byron, there’s a centre for whale research run by the Australian Whale Conservation Society and NSW National parks and Wildlife, who monitor the habits of the whales and keep photo-records. Of course, there’s a corresponding Byron Bay Whale and Dolphin festival (September).

Kicking Arts festival, Byron (July). This festival provides a venue for regional visual and performance art in the form of sculpture, mime, painting, music, comedy and satire. It gives local performance artistes and creators the opportunity to publicly strut their stuff. For a month, either their work or their performances can be observed in Byron Bay shop windows, parks, streets and cafes.

Brunswick Fish'N'Chip Festival, held in the fishing village of Brunswick Heads, is devoted to those who like to fish or chop wood, (‘chip’ referring to chips of wood, not the french fry version).
Northern Rivers Writers Festival: (July) Attracts big name Australian finest writers from around the country as guest speakers, which in turn brings in crowds from near and far to enjoy six days and nights of celebration, exchange and reflection. The festival is designed to "amuse, challenge and stimulate," giving readers a rare opportunity to get together with their favourite writers.
Program covers fiction, non-fiction, theatre and film writing, poetry and prose. Staged at the Byron Bay Beach Club; increasing in popularity each year.
The Chincogan Fiesta (Sept) dates from 1949 when the tragic drowning of two children in the river near Mullumbimby, resulted the in a committee being established to concentrate on fund raising for a new swimming pool. The first carnival took place in 1950 and raised 500 pounds. The first Chincogan Queen competition was implemented in 1959 and the following year saw the first Chincogan Derby Run. The highlight of the 1965 fiesta was an elephant race down the main street. Fiesta events include the Chincogan Charge, a 6.9 km race up and down the Mt Chincogan. As the Chincogan Fiesta gained strength and popularity from year to year, it has become one of the larger festivals to take place the Northern Rivers of New South Wales. Due to insurance difficulties the festival no longer continues .
